In the next three days, I have to write a term paper for my World War II history course. I must say, although this course has been quite frustrating (middle of summer), it has also been very fascinating.
My paper is on: British morale in the face of German bombing. Was it strong, as the traditional view goes? Or was it defeated? In the process, I have encountered the classic speeches of our good friend Winston Churchill. For your reading pleasure:
"Let us therefore brace ourselves to our duties, and so bear ourselves that if the British Empire and Commonwealth last for a thousand years, men will still say, 'This was their finest hour' ."
"We shall fight on the beaches. We shall fight on the landing grounds. We shall fight in the fields, and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills. We shall never surrender!"
Tell me after hearing that, would you want to go fight for your country?
I say....oh yes I would.
In case you didn't notice - I sure love Britain.

Hey,
I know that you are in the midst of writing this crazy term paper. I thought that maybe this piece of information might help you out...or it maybe too late. If you are interested in contacting someone that remembers first hand the bombings in England during WWII, think no further than our good friend Alex Pasmore. He told me some super stories of taking shelter in the London Underground with his mother and siblings during air raids. Maybe you could get a few first hand account quotes to round out your term paper. Email me @ creativenlife@yahoo.com for his addy. When all is said and done, I would love to read some of these papers you have been writing (Thomas Merton and whatnot). Keep up the good work and continue to expand that awesome mind of yours!
Sharelley! Ok, so I think you're fab. I'm sorry to hear you're still doing school - what is that, 3 spring/summer courses? Girl, you've got stamina. Anyhow, after reading your comment on Ang's post about shopping, I'm eager to hear that "good times are in order" just as I'm returning back to BC. Can't wait to dance, dance, dance at the Howie/Thorpe wedding with ya.
Hey, did you hear that Curtis Sittenfeld has written a new book? Perhaps you, Alyssa and myself can gush about what a great writer she is when we're all reunited next week!
Good luck with the final push with the homework - you can do it!
